Becoming Jane

Release Date: February 12, 2008
Length: Approx. 120 minutes
Rating: 3 out of 4 stars

Becoming Jane is one of the more light-hearted period movies to come out in quite a while. It is the story of the famous author Jane Austen (Anne Hatheway) as a young adult when she meets a young gentleman named Tom LeFroy who in the beginning exasperates her constantly because he challenges both her intellect and her heart. Of course they fall in love, but are forbidden to marry by LeFroy?s rich uncle. Does their love persevere despite what society dictates?

The movie itself has wonderfully charming moments, and an emotional ending. The pacing of the movie was a bit on the slow side. The scenery and costumes were absolutely gorgeous, and the dialogue was surprisingly easily to follow for a period movie. Anne Hatheway did an amazing job of capturing the true essence of who Jane was. She made you feel like you really got to know her by the end of the movie. The movie is inspiring enough that if you have never read a Jane Austen novel before, you will definitely want to pick one up now.
